Facial massage is considered an effective and popular procedure today; thanks to improved blood flow, tissues are stimulated, wrinkles are reduced in size, and the skin becomes strong and elastic. Which oil is best to use for this procedure - advice from experienced people.
Which facial massage oil should you choose?
Facial massage oil performs several main tasks - it ensures unhindered gliding of the massage therapist's hands and has a moisturizing, nourishing, toning effect on the skin.
Facial massage using oils:
- accelerates blood circulation and improves cellular regeneration;
- nourishes and oxygenates cells;
- relieves puffiness and bags under the eyes;
- tones the skin, restoring its firmness and elasticity.
Before choosing the best oil for facial massage, you need to decide on your skin type. For dry - from apricot kernels, avocados, wheat germ, Australian nuts, citrus fruits, the main thing is that there are no allergic manifestations to certain components of the cosmetic composition.
For normal skin, olive, sunflower, almond, and jojoba oil are suitable. Almond oil is also effectively used to tighten and smooth the skin around the eyes.
If your skin is prone to oily skin, you can use thistle, St. John's wort, dogwort, and jojoba oils in moderate quantities. And if the skin is excessively greasy, it is not recommended to use oil.

Basic oils for facial massage
The basic bases are natural, cold-pressed vegetable oils, enriched with vitamins and microelements. The following oil bases are used in cosmetology:
- Olive oil is a universal and affordable product that restores skin elasticity, fights the first signs of aging, replenishes mineral deficiencies in the body, and can be used for hypersensitive skin.
- Almond is the best ingredient for face and body massage; it effectively copes with puffiness, strengthens facial muscles, smoothes expression wrinkles, and gives the skin a radiant shine. It has a light structure and is quickly absorbed into the skin.
- Sesame oil is a godsend for oily skin, helps remove waste and toxins from the body, cleanses pores of pollution, has a wound-healing effect, relieves irritation and stops inflammatory processes. Renews cells.
- Jojoba – used by women over 30 years of age, it enriches the skin with beneficial substances, smoothes expression lines, and perfectly relieves inflammation. Stimulates cell regeneration, helps retain moisture in the body.
- Peach - can rejuvenate aging skin, penetrates deeply into the layers of the epidermis, saturates them with useful substances. The consistency of the oil is dense, it is absorbed for a long time, and therefore requires a small amount when applied. Not recommended for oily skin.
- Apricot kernels are hypoallergenic and can be used for sensitive skin. Removes notes of aging, eliminates expression wrinkles.
- Grape is a powerful antioxidant that easily copes with the first signs of skin aging and prevents age-related changes. An excellent moisturizer.

Hemorrhoids kill the patient in 79% of cases.
An active component is also selected from a number of essential oils for facial massage against wrinkles. It is important to organize the combination of basics correctly to achieve the desired result.
Compound
Many massage therapists and women who give themselves facial massages prefer to use oils, because they provide smooth movement while working with the pads of the fingers or the edge of the palm. In addition, before each procedure, you can quickly and easily prepare them yourself (preparation is reduced to mixing and heating in a water bath to a temperature of 45 degrees).
To obtain a liquid suspension take:
- The base oil is usually cold pressed.
- Active substance. It includes esters that have a different spectrum of effects on the skin.
Base oils include:
- olive, rich in vitamins A and E, which provide skin elasticity and fight wrinkles (suitable for sensitive skin);
- sesame is a salvation for oily skin, as it normalizes the amount of sebum secreted;
- jojoba, used by women over 30 (an excellent source of collagen);
- from peach and apricot kernels, which have a denser consistency and are suitable mainly for people with dry skin types (promote regeneration, remove toxins and rejuvenate);
- almond, which experts recommend using for aging skin, because it has a lifting effect;
- from grape seeds, which prolong youthfulness of the skin due to the presence of antioxidants.
Active substances:
- citrus esters that cleanse pores and promote normal sebum (subcutaneous sebum) production;
- rosemary extract, which normalizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands;
- bergamot, which makes the skin matte;
- mint ether, disinfecting and relaxing the skin;
- rose oil, rejuvenating the dermis;
- chamomile extract, which relieves inflammation;
- geranium oil, which fights wrinkles;
- clove extract, which improves microcirculation of the skin and replenishes the dermis with oxygen;
- cinnamon and ginger are designed to relieve puffiness and swelling;
- Juniper ester prevents wrinkles, and pine oil improves blood circulation and removes toxins.
As you can see, you can prepare a healing remedy for massage yourself. It is not necessary to stop at two components (base and excipient). You can combine different oils and esters depending on the desired result.
I would like to pay special attention to what is not advisable to include in oils. Cosmetologists do not recommend using nut oils for people prone to allergies. But there is one way to check if you are having an allergic reaction. Apply a drop of oil to the skin of your wrist or behind your ear. Massage the area for a few minutes and then wait the same amount of time. In the absence of redness, peeling, swelling and itching, you can safely add oil to the composition of the healing potion.

Do-it-yourself composition
If you have decided which oil is best for facial massage, you can begin to create your own composition that meets the needs of a specific type.
Pharmacy products are also created taking into account the types of skin, but have a narrow purpose. A product prepared at home will bring more positive effects from facial massage.
To prepare the mixture you will need a base and additives in the form of essential oils and other natural ingredients. Olive oil is used as a base, which is famous for its wonderful properties not only in cooking, but also in cosmetology.
An alternative would be sesame, flaxseed, rose or almond, which are ideal for normal to dry skin.
If you have a tendency to be excessively oily, use grape seed or jojoba oil. Problematic and acne-prone skin needs the soothing and healing effect of calendula and St. John's wort.
How to choose the right oil for facial massage?
The product should only be of high quality, without a feeling of bitterness or pungent odor when opening the bottle. It’s great if you have vitamin E as a preservative. It’s important to look at the expiration date. Before use, test the product on a small area of skin:
- Apply a drop of product evenly to the skin.
- Check for absorbency - instantly or not?
- If there is an oily sheen after using the product?
- Have you noticed any allergic reactions - rash, irritation, redness of the skin?
In the absence of knowledge and experience, it is best to give preference to products marked as professional massage oil. Baby oil is considered hypoallergenic and universal, does not cause allergies and is used to solve many problems with aging skin.
How to use facial massage oil at home?
Before starting the procedure, you need to thoroughly cleanse your facial skin, use tonics, lotions, scrubs or micellar water. You can also breathe in the steam to effectively open the pores.
Warm the massage oil to room temperature. Apply a massage product to your fingertips and spread along the massage lines with light movements. Do not rinse until completely absorbed.
To obtain the desired result, sessions should be performed every other day for a month. To enhance the regenerative process, immerse yourself in relaxation for 30 minutes - listen to light music, drink tea with honey and herbs, mentally relax your mind.
Attention! You cannot massage your face if you have inflammatory processes on the skin, herpes, open wounds, large moles and large warts.

Attention! Self-prepared product should be stored in the refrigerator in a glass container with a tightly closed lid. The service life is about six months, the main thing is to regularly check the product for freshness, in order to avoid the appearance of minor impurities.

Oils for skin care around the eyes
Don’t blindly trust labels and buy the first oil you come across, or run to the kitchen and pour vegetable oil from a bottle on your face. You are unlikely to get any benefit from this. But you can feel the full extent of the harm from kitchen oil on your face.
Therefore, first of all, you need to understand the needs and initial data of your skin.
This is exactly what professional cosmetologists warn those who have decided that since the oil is natural, it means it is 100% safe and healthy.
Well, there are a couple of rules that you should immediately take into account if you decide to experience the magical power of natural oils:
- Immediately “NO” to oils that directly contain chemical components - parabens, silicones, mineral oil (the question is whether to write this information at all.)
- The second “NO” can be safely said to cheap oils of unknown origin. There are no miracles.
This may upset some people, but if you think that there is no difference between apricot kernel oil from a pharmacy for 50 rubles and the same apricot oil from iherb for 500 rubles, then most likely you are mistaken.
The desire to save money is understandable, but believe me, quality really costs money. And valuable oils are valuable because high-quality raw materials and the correct process of their production cost a certain amount of money. I won't reveal anything new here.
In my case, from the pharmacy kit, perhaps only sea buckthorn worked 100%. Otherwise, those oils are like smearing plasticine on your face. Still, you should save on your face (and on yourself) in the last place, then the question “is it healthy to smear your face with oils” simply shouldn’t arise.
In my opinion, the best way to save money in this matter is not to skimp on quality, but to buy cosmetics and oils in reliable, trusted stores during various promotions and sales. Fortunately, they happen quite often and thus you can always find a good oil for any budget.
To do this, I talk about the most interesting and profitable promotions on my blog.
To help you get your bearings, I will give a short table with the specialization of the MAIN base oils that are most often used in cosmetology:
- For dry and dehydrated skin - avocado oil, argan oil, olive oil, rose oil; for dry skin, the same butters may be suitable - coconut oil, shea butter, not recommended for other skin types.
- Anti-wrinkle oils - rose oil, wheat germ oil.
- For oily and inflamed skin - black cumin oil, St. John's wort oil, grape seed oil.
- Universal oils that are suitable for all skin types - apricot kernel oil, redneck oil, wheat germ oil, sea buckthorn oil.
- The best anti-aging facial oils against wrinkles are rose oil and wheat germ oil.
- Any of the oils listed are suitable for facial massage, because the main thing they require is improved hand gliding, and any oil is capable of this. Even, God forgive me, mineral oil can perform this function.
I describe how to use facial oil solely from my OWN experience, based on my own feelings and the results of many years of using oils in skin care.
1) As I already indicated above, you need to choose exclusively natural oils and preferably with a complex combined composition of different VALUABLE oils, and if you go with dimithicons, parabens, mineral oil, etc. chemistry - straight away! In this case, you can do without this crap; the oil is perfectly stored without chemicals.
2) If possible, avoid “heavy oils” in facial care, for example, coconut oil or shea butter, they are really quite heavy, take longer to absorb and can just “clog” the pores on the face, although I also like them for the body.
3) Use oils in doses, rub a couple of drops of oil between your palms and apply them to your face - this kind of oiling is enough for me! Now, then you won’t have to remove excess oil from your face and there will be no swelling in the morning (even if you are prone to it and apply the oil to the skin around your eyes).
We suggest you read: What can cause the skin on the soles of your feet to peel?
4) Combine oils with serums and/or face creams. For me, this is a win-win combo that works much better than just face creams and even many masks. This way you can 100% eliminate increased dry skin after using oils, because it’s not for nothing that cosmetologists repeat out loud - oils are 100% fats, and our skin is water even more important. Don’t forget to not only “nourish” the skin, but also “give it water”.
My main scheme for using facial oil in care is washing with foam, toner, serum and then oil. Ideally, also spray it all on top with hydrosol or moisturizing spray.
5) Facial massage with oil is perhaps the best thing you can do to your face at home. In this case, I will not go into detail; one of the most effective in my case is massage with Lyapko applicators, which I recently wrote about on my Instagram.
Castor oil
Jojoba oil
This product copes even with formed wrinkles and is especially suitable for mature or very dry facial skin. Due to the high content of the natural antioxidant vitamin E, jojoba oil protects skin cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, and amino acids are responsible for skin elasticity.
Cacao butter
Cocoa butter contains fatty acids, tannins, methylxatin and vitamins. All these substances are responsible for cell renewal, provide protection from the harmful effects of the environment, prevent drying of the skin and the formation of wrinkles. Application: cocoa butter can be replaced with a nourishing cream; for this, you need to apply a small piece to your face, and when it starts to melt, move it over the skin. Ideal before bed.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil nourishes the skin, provides reliable protection from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, and improves metabolic processes. When applied, an invisible film is formed on the face, which provides an optimal level of moisture, thereby preventing it from drying out and the formation of wrinkles. Application: only refined oil is suitable for facial care, which is melted and applied to the face before bed. The advantage of coconut oil is that it is very light and suitable even for the eyelid area.
Linseed oil
For aging skin, flax seed oil will be a real panacea, because in terms of biological value it occupies one of the first places. With constant use, you can smooth out small wrinkles, increase skin turgor and tighten the oval of the face. Application: the mixture is applied to the face, excluding the eye area (it is quite heavy and can cause swelling), after 10 minutes it is washed off with water.
Flaxseed oil is useful for both external and internal use. Taking a tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach and at night, after some time the result will be evident. To prevent skin aging and the formation of wrinkles, you should pay attention to the skin of the neck and décolleté. It is these zones that are the first to “sag”, become flabby and reveal true age.
Many people use facial massage techniques to prevent and eliminate wrinkles. If you watch training videos, in many of them it is carried out using oils. Also, many cosmetologists use it for this purpose. At the same time, apply it generously so that your hands glide.
And here many people have a question - what cosmetic oil is better to use in order to have the maximum effect on the face?
If you carefully read the preface to this article, you have already concluded that even in a minimal amount (1-2 drops), regular use of the oil in its pure form can be harmful. And during a massage, it’s not even a couple of drops, but a few ml, which you will carefully rub into your face for 20-30 minutes several times a week.
The consequences for oily skin are clogged pores, increased sebum production, and the appearance of acne, even if it is not comedogenic.
The consequences for dry skin are the destruction of the lipid layer and, as a result, severe dryness and flaking.
