Lipoma on the back

Causes

A soft tissue lipoma of the back is formed as a result of metabolic disorders, resulting in blockage of the sebaceous glands and the growth of adipose tissue. The reasons for this are hormonal imbalances (for example, in women during menopause) caused by improper functioning of the hypothalamus, protein metabolism failures, and general slagging in the body. In addition to internal processes, the appearance of wen is also influenced by external factors, such as:

  • poor ecology in the place of residence;
  • sedentary lifestyle. bad habits, unhealthy diet;
  • bruises or other chemical and mechanical injuries.

Why does pathology develop?

To this day, scientists are conducting research, but the direct causes of wen on the back have not been found. There is an opinion that lipoma appears as a result of severe slagging in the body, but this theory has no scientific confirmation.

Along with this, there are some provoking factors that can affect the formation and growth of a wen on the back, but even their presence does not determine 100% of the problem. These factors include:

  • harmful heredity - in people whose relatives suffer from this pathology, the risk of developing lipomatosis increases;
  • prolonged excessive compression, soft tissue injuries of the back;
  • diseases of the endocrine system;
  • diabetes mellitus, menopause;
  • liver pathologies, malignant neoplasms;
  • disturbances in the process of protein fermentation;
  • a lipoma on the back can be a consequence of traumatic brain injury or infections leading to damage to the hypothalamus;
  • alcohol and tobacco addiction.

Scientists consider the most plausible version of metabolic dysfunctions, or more precisely, a violation of lipid metabolism (the breakdown and absorption of fats) and blockage of the sebaceous glands.

As a rule, wen on the back appears in people over 30 years of age - in 95% of cases these are single encapsulated neoplasms; multiple lesions are less common.

Can a wen hurt?

There are no painful sensations when wen appears, regardless of the location of the tumor. There may be unpleasant sensations when pressed if the lipoma becomes inflamed and bursts. When a fatty lump grows to a large size (see photo), pain appears as the formation is compressed by adjacent organs and nerve processes. Pain also accompanies the process of suppuration of some types of wen.

Types of lipomas

Before deciding how to get rid of a wen on the back, you should determine its type.

Lipomas are classified as follows:

  1. By quantity, formations can be single or multiple. The first are characterized by the formation of one lipoma on the body. To cure it, one simple operation is enough. When multiple lipomas are removed, the risk of relapse is significantly higher.
  2. According to the location of the tumor - subcutaneous, intermuscular and internal. Subcutaneous wen look like lumps and form directly under the skin, easily palpable with your fingers. They are not dangerous and are easy to diagnose and cut out. Intermuscular lipomas are structured in the muscles and are characterized by greater density, tuberosity and indistinct edges. They are more difficult to detect. Internal wen grows on internal organs and can cause problems with their functioning as they grow.

The size of wen can be either tiny (no larger than a pimple) or small, or gigantic - more than 15 cm in diameter. Such education causes physical and aesthetic inconvenience. The growth rate may also vary.

If the lipoma is actively growing, it must be treated urgently to avoid complications.

The neoplasm may consist of more than just adipose tissue.

Depending on the structures that complement the wen, it is called:

  • Fibrolipoma. Due to the presence of connective tissue, it appears denser to the touch.
  • Mixolipoma. It is formed due to mucin, a substance from the secretory fluid that produces mucous glands.
  • Angiolipoma. It is characterized by a large accumulation of blood vessels and is formed in the internal organs (liver, kidneys, spinal column).
  • Myolipoma containing muscle fibers.

Wen also includes atheroma - a benign formation with a black dot at the top. It develops due to blockage of the duct of a certain sebaceous gland.

Atheromas do not grow large, but they suppurate more often than lipomas.

Milia, which appear as small white growths, are also classified as wen. They appear mainly in adolescents on the face, less often in the area of the shoulder girdle and shoulder blades.

Why is a wen on the back dangerous?

Purulent inflammation of the wen on the back develops with atheroma - a type of lipoma in which the appearance of a neoplasm is caused by blockage of the ducts of the subcutaneous sebaceous glands. You should consult a doctor if the wen becomes red, hurts, has a burning sensation, or discharges pus. Delaying treatment of atheroma leads to the fact that it bursts, leaving a scar or a scar (if the tumor is significant), or to the development of an associated infection. Encapsulated internal lipomas degenerate into liposarcoma (malignant tumor).

Compresses on the back

To combat wen on the back, you can use compresses. A variety of components may be involved:

Treatment with water and sunflower oil

Water with sunflower oil. Take the presented components in equal quantities, dip gauze in the resulting mixture and apply it to the affected area. After this, lay down the film and patch. It is best to do this manipulation before going to bed at night.

Get rid of it with linen cloth and black pepper

Place a dessert boatload of freshly ground black pepper on a linen cloth. Dip the napkin thoroughly in alcohol and place it on the wen. You need to keep this compress for 15 minutes. The number of procedures per day is 3, and the course of therapy will last a month.

Infusion of ivy leaves and stems

A water infusion of ivy leaves and stems. You need to take the indicated components, place them in a glass and pour vodka. Then transfer to a container with dark glass and leave for 20 days. Treatment

The subcutaneous wen does not need treatment if it does not increase in size, does not hurt and does not bother the patient in any way. Periodic monitoring of the lipoma in this case will prevent the development of negative consequences of its degeneration. If the tumor is large, its growth (inward or outward), and other changes occurring with the tumor, the doctor makes decisions on drug treatment or the need to remove the wen.

Drug treatment

Ointments or compresses when a wen appears in the back area do not resolve the tumor. In some cases, it is practiced to inject a drug into the area of the tumor that breaks down adipose tissue (a solution for subcutaneous injection with a needle is injected directly into the contents of the lipoma capsule). The effect occurs a few weeks after the course of such injections, the lipoma either decreases in size or goes away.

The hormonal drug Diprospan for subcutaneous injection promotes the redistribution of fat and enhances the synthesis of triglycerides and fatty acids. Prescribed for large lipomas on the back (more than 10 cm in diameter). The treatment regimen and dosage are selected individually by the attending physician; a single dose is calculated according to the scheme of 0.2 ml of solution for each centimeter of tumor. Weekly dose - 1 ml. The medicine has contraindications, so its independent and uncontrolled use is unacceptable.

Removing a wen on the back

A lipoma on the back is removed using different methods; the choice of method depends on the size of the tumor, its location, and accompanying symptoms. Removal is prescribed in cases where the wen increases in size, changes, and brings pain and discomfort. Small tumors on the back are removed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis; Large lipomas are removed in the hospital under general anesthesia. In addition to the surgical method, liposuction, laser or electro-coagulation removal are used.

Surgical removal

During surgery to remove a lipoma, the doctor makes an incision with a surgical scalpel, removes the wen capsule, cleans the wound, and sutures the incision. After the operation, a scar remains, so from an aesthetic point of view, the method is not always desirable. After the operation, the patient expects a two-week rehabilitation; this method of removal takes a lot of time in total. This method is chosen in cases of large lipomas, internal tumors and in cases where the use of other methods does not bring the desired effect.

Laser removal

A painless method that involves exposing the wen to laser radiation helps remove lipoma quickly and without leaving marks on the skin of the back. There are practically no relapses of the disease after laser removal, this is an advantage. A postoperative wound on the back heals within 10-12 days; to speed up the process, it is recommended to use special ointments (Tetracycline, Levomikol). The excised tissue is examined to identify cancer cells.

Liposuction method

When removing a lump in the back using liposuction, excess fatty tissue is sucked out through skin incisions no larger than 3 mm. The process is carried out using a special vacuum apparatus. After removal, no scars remain on the skin; from an aesthetic and practical point of view, this removal method is convenient for both the doctor and the patient. If the procedure is performed poorly, the process of lipoma growth resumes.

Electrocoagulation

Burning out small wen on the back using electric current is used in cosmetology. Skin healing after the procedure occurs in 7-10 days. During the process of electrocoagulation, the wen softens, the structure of the adipose tissue changes, as a result of which the neoplasm resolves. Not suitable for internal lipomas and large lipomas.

Treatment of wen at home has a positive effect in solving the problem of wen on the back. Each person must choose their own product, taking into account the characteristics of the seal and its size. But a lipoma can be eliminated using such methods only if it is small in size. Otherwise, it will not be possible to solve the problem without surgical intervention. Treatment with folk remedies

If the patient refuses to cut out the wen and insists on using non-traditional, folk methods of treatment, he receives information from the doctor about the negative consequences of such a decision. Under no circumstances should massage be performed in the area where the tumor is located, as this will accelerate tumor growth. For local treatment of lipomas on the back, the following agents are used:

  • Compresses with aloe juice - a gauze compress with freshly squeezed aloe juice is applied to the area where the compaction is localized, three times a day, for 20-30 minutes. Apply a sheet cut lengthwise. Duration of treatment is 2-3 weeks.
  • Compresses with celandine decoction are fixed on the skin with a band-aid for 20-40 minutes twice a day. Course duration is 2-3 weeks.
  • Boiled onions and laundry soap. Boil the onion, grind it into a puree, grate a piece of laundry soap, and mix the ingredients. Apply to the area with the wen, placing a gauze bandage on top. The duration of treatment is 4 weeks, 3 times a day.
  • Viburnum tincture with honey. Take 1 kg of fresh viburnum, 500 g of honey, 500 g of cognac. Grind the viburnum in a meat grinder, add honey and cognac. Leave in a dark place for a month. Take the tincture 3 times a day according to Art. l. while eating.

Each person can live most of his life and not realize that a lipoma has formed on the skin on the back in the area of the spinal column.

It may not show signs or grow for a long time. The cause of the growth of a wen can be various factors, such as injury, metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalance, and constant friction with clothing.

One of the most unfavorable prognosis for a wen is its degeneration into liposarcoma. This is a malignant neoplasm that can develop into a malignant tumor over time. That is why you should contact an oncologist if a number of unpleasant symptoms arise.

In general, a wen formed on the back in the spinal column has a fairly favorable prognosis. It is important to consult a doctor promptly while the formation is small. This will help reduce the risk of its degeneration into a malignant course.

Features of pathology in children

Due to the appearance of lipoma, the growth and development of the child is disrupted.

A lump on the back of a child can become inflamed, and its presence can also pinch nerves and tissue.
Fatty tumors rarely form in children, but if one of the parents has or had a fatty lump on their back, it can form in the same place in the baby. The tumor may increase in size as the child grows or remains in one pore. Since all the tissues of a child are softer and more flexible than those of adults, it is recommended to remove even small formations so that they do not interfere with development or compress muscles and blood vessels. Surgery to remove a lipoma in a child can only be performed after the little patient reaches 5 years of age.
